Aurangzeb Movie Review: A Gripping Thriller with a Stellar Cast

Aurangzeb is a 2013 Hindi thriller film directed by Atul Sabharwal and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. The film stars Arjun Kapoor in a double role, along with Rishi Kapoor, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jackie Shroff, Amrita Singh, Sasha Agha and Swara Bhaskar in pivotal roles. The film revolves around the complex and ruthless world of land mafia in Gurgaon, where a police officer and his family infiltrate the empire of a powerful criminal by replacing his son with his lookalike.

Plot

The film begins with a voice-over by Yashvardhan Singh (Jackie Shroff), a powerful and corrupt businessman who controls the illegal land deals in Gurgaon. He reveals that he has an illegitimate son, Ajay (Arjun Kapoor), whom he abandoned at birth and who now works as a hitman for him. He also has a legitimate son, Vishal (Arjun Kapoor), who lives with his mother Neena (Amrita Singh) in Delhi and is unaware of his father's identity.

Meanwhile, Ravikant Phogat (Rishi Kapoor) is a senior police officer who is determined to bring down Yashvardhan and his empire. He has a loyal team of officers, including his son Arya (Prithviraj Sukumaran), his nephew Dev (Sikandar Kher) and his daughter-in-law Suman (Swara Bhaskar). Ravikant hatches a plan to infiltrate Yashvardhan's family by kidnapping Ajay and replacing him with Vishal, who is his identical twin brother. Ravikant had rescued Vishal from an orphanage when he was a child and raised him as his own son.

Vishal agrees to take part in the plan and undergoes training to impersonate Ajay. He successfully enters Yashvardhan's household and starts gathering information about his illegal activities. He also develops a romantic relationship with Ritu (Sasha Agha), Yashvardhan's girlfriend's daughter. However, things get complicated when Ajay escapes from captivity and returns to reclaim his place. He exposes Vishal's identity to Yashvardhan, who orders him to kill Vishal.

Vishal manages to escape from Ajay's clutches and confronts him at a construction site. The two brothers engage in a fierce fight, during which Vishal reveals that he is Ajay's twin brother and that Yashvardhan had abandoned them at birth. He also tells him that Ravikant is their biological grandfather, who had given up their mother Veera (Tanvi Azmi) for adoption when she was pregnant with them. Veera had later married Yashvardhan's brother, who was killed by Yashvardhan.

Ajay is shocked by the truth and decides to join forces with Vishal to expose Yashvardhan. They reach Yashvardhan's office, where they find Ravikant and his team waiting for them. Ravikant reveals that he had planned the whole operation to bring down Yashvardhan and reunite with his grandchildren. He also tells them that he had planted a mole in Yashvardhan's gang, who is none other than Ritu.

Yashvardhan arrives at the scene with his men and a shootout ensues. Ravikant kills Yashvardhan, while Arya kills Neena, who had sided with Yashvardhan. Ajay sacrifices himself to save Vishal from a bullet fired by one of Yashvardhan's men. Vishal survives and is taken away by Ravikant and his team.

The film ends with a voice-over by Vishal, who says that he has inherited both the good and the bad from his family and that he will use them to make his own destiny.

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, \"AURANGZEB is a well-made thriller that keeps you engrossed and captivated all through. The plot, the pace and the performances are the three aces that make this one a compelling watch.\" Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, \"Aurangzeb is a solid thriller with more twists than you can count. It's a throwback to those violent dramas of brothers on opposite sides of the law.\" Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, \"Aurangzeb is an ambitious film that attempts to create a sprawling saga about greed, corruption and family. It has some terrific moments and commendable performances but it doesn't quite come together as a satisfying whole.\"

The film was also a moderate success at the box office, earning 23.85 crore (US$3.4 million) in India. It was declared an average grosser by Box Office India.
